Russian President Putin On New U.S. Sanctions: 'Will Need To Respond To These Actions'

RT: Putin: New US sanctions are cynical, destroy international law

The new round of US sanctions against Russia is “extremely cynical,” President Vladimir Putin said, accusing Washington of using its political advantage for business purposes.

If the US implements new sanctions against Russia, “it will be particularly regrettable because this would be an act of aggravation and exceptional cynicism,” Putin said.

“It's an obvious attempt [by the US] to use its geopolitical advantages in the competitive struggle with the goal of ensuring its economic interests at the expense of its other allies,” he added.

Have you read the bill? It's sheer lunacy. It treats Russia, Iran and North Korea as the source of all evil, which is nonsense, in the world and its provisions are one step below a declaration of war. Of course Russia will have to respond.

Russia iran north korea are all good. yep. perhaps for you carl

Well with respect to Russia the democrats are tiring things in an undoable knot. Stupid thing to do. Trump could negotiate a better deal with some freedom to act.
Perhaps concessions of territory in Ukraine or in Syria.
Iran is a loose cannon and so is North Korea. The Chinese are key to improvements in both countries. We are best to hear up and get prepared.

Anon,

Carl did not say Russia, Iran, and North Korea are all "good." What he said was it is misguided to treat them as the source of all evil.

I do recall some classic stupidity on the part of Paul Ryan where he said the following, to paraphrase, "Russia is the leading cause of instability in the world today." Actually Mr. Ryan, in the 21st century America is the leading cause of instability. Let's see here, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Ukraine, and I think we could find more examples. Suffice it to say America is the leader in causing instability in the 21st century. Mr. Ryan and his ilk may want to look in the mirror.

Aaron,

As for your first two sentences, I could not have put this any better myself. As to whether or not Trump could negotiate a better deal, I really don't know. I do think Rex Tillerson could. After all he did negotiate the 500,000,000 oil deal between Russia and the Exxon Mobil. He managed to pull this off in spite of the facts that Russia could have found better talent elsewhere who would have carried out the project at a less expensive price and, given the fact that Russia has good reason not to trust America or Americans, his job was made even more difficult. To pull this off he will need some freedom to act and cannot have imbeciles in Congress constantly looking over his shoulder questioning and undermining everything.

This bill "stupidly" lumps Russia in with NoKo & Iran - which is insulting in itself. But the optics of more sanctions against Russia at a time when the fake news has been 24/7 pumping anti-Russia propaganda on the airwaves makes it appear that the fake news has caused Congress to "take a tough stance" on Russia. I pray Trump will veto this, as it will shoot-down any possibility of improving U.S.-Russia relations.

ExxonMobil showed “reckless disregard” in violating Russian sanctions while Rex Tillerson was the oil company’s CEO, the treasury department said on Thursday.

The treasury fined Exxon $2m for violating sanctions that the Obama administration imposed on Russian entities in 2014 over Russia’s annexation of Crimea. And it said the company’s “senior-most executives” were aware of the sanctions when two of its subsidiaries signed deals with the Russian oil magnate Igor Sechin. Sechin is the chairman of the Russian oil giant Rosneft and is on a US blacklist that bars Americans from doing business with him.

(Reuters) - The White House said on Sunday that U.S. President Donald Trump was open to signing legislation toughening sanctions on Russia after Senate and House leaders reached agreement on a bill late last week.

The sanctions against Russia themselves were "reckless." At this point, acting to undermine them is likely the most patriotic thing an American can do.

I am well aware of Trump supposedly wanting to veto this to get something tougher. This would be tripling down on stupidity. As I had stated before, I am not optimistic that he has the character to do what is right in this situation.

I'm not even sure DJT has the intellect to even know what he needs to do let alone the character even if he does have the intellect.

B.Poser said...

Shreerah,

I pray Trump will veto this as well. I've contacted the White House as every US citizen has the right to do to voice our positions. While prayers, even the most miraculous ones can and do get answered, it hard to maintain optimism sometimes. I pray he will have both the moral ability to judge right from wrong and will have courage to follow through. This would mean vetoing the bill.

After that the next move is Congress's which they will probably override. At least POTUS would be on the record as doing the right thing. In the face of enormous and unreasonable opposition, people of good character do the right thing. Now may be his time.

Trump will sign, in record time.

While I pray and hope I'm proven wrong, actually I think he will sign it. Unfortunately nothing to indicate that he has the morals or character to do the right thing here.

As I've explained elsewhere, if Europe is forced to choose between Russia and the US they are going to choose Russia. This will flip these "allies" to enemies very quickly. This is a stupid move of extraordinary magnitude.
